How to jump a car

Jumping a car is a common and necessary skill.  Here's how to do it:

    1. **Safety First**: Make sure both cars are in Park (for automatic) or Neutral (for manual), and turn off the ignition in both cars.  Also, set the parking brake.

    2. **Get the right tools**: You'll need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle with a working battery.

    3. **Connect the jumper cables**:

a Open the hoods of both cars.

b Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on both batteries.

c Connect the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.

d Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.

e Connect the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the working battery.

f **Important Step**: Connect the other end of the black cable to the unpainted metal surface under the hood of the dead car.  Keep the battery up, this fire can also work.

    4. **Start Working Car**: Start the car with a working battery and let it run for a few minutes.

    5. **Dead Car Starting Attempt**: Try to start the car with a dead battery.  If it starts, great!  Then press once.

    6. **DISCONNECT IN REVERSE ORDER**: Once the dead car is running, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order you connected them:

a Remove the black cable from the rear chassis.

b Remove the black cable from the working car.

c Remove the red cable from the working car.

d First remove the red cable from the dead car.

    7. **Drive the jump-start car**: Let the recently jump-started car run for a few minutes to charge its battery, and then run it to make sure the battery is fully charged.  .  be done

Always consult your car's owner's manual, as some vehicles have specific jump start procedures.  If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, consider calling a professional for help.
